How To Write Effective Email Subject Lines

by Scott Bradley on March 25, 2011

Have you ever written an e-mail, and then didn’t know what to put for your email subject line?

If you have had challenges with this in the past, you are going to love this post because I recently learned some great tips when it comes to crafting effective subject lines for e-mails after attending Infusioncon this week.

During the session on copywriting, the presenter gave some phenomenal tips when it comes to creating effectively converting subject lines for e-mails.

Here is what I learned…

1. Keep your subject lines for e-mails between 30-50 characters

If your subject line is too long, the recipient won’t make the effort to read it. Put the most important information in the front of the subject line that will grab their attention.

Remember that mobile phones can only see about 30 characters for the subject line!

2. Have your subject line be a conversation starter

For example- have the subject line to the e-mail pique the curiosity of the recipient so that it will get them to open the message to read what it says.

Here is a great example…

Did You Watch This Video (Firstname)?

3. If you are doing a webinar and want people to attend, the best subject line you can use is “Webinar: (Title of webinar)”

It makes sense right?

Those are great take aways from InfusionCon. When there was a question from the audience and it had to do with losing weight, I immediately recognized your voice!

I think the conversation starter is a often overlooked by people. Most people seem to lack the creativity or originality to step out of their comfort zone.

Just recently, I started working a real job (from home) because of an email that I sent with the following subject line:

“5 Reasons Why You Need To Look At Today”

And that was before I heard (I attended parts of InfusionCon virtually) that the subject line should be 30 – 50 characters.

Looking forward to “bumping” into you somewhere down the road as this position should allow me to grow more into the person I am meant to be. My new employer was there and wanted to me to watch the presentation I heard you at.

Thanks for being a great example.

Oops! I forgot to add “This Resume” as part of the subject line.

The email subject line needs to be a “grabber” just like the headline of a blog. In fact, if you’re pinging a blog to subscribers the subject line and the headline will be the same — so it needs to compel the reader to go to the post. I’d add that starting a subject line with what, why, how to, 10 ways to — and how come are very effective.
